BSC 390 introduces undergraduate students to the foundations of health equity research, spanning problem framing, study design, ethics, community engagement, and communicating results. While the course continues to coordinate with the Center for Health, Engagement and Transformation (CHET),it is intentionally structured for all students (including, but not limited to, SPARK scholars). Students will: (1) develop a concise study proposal anchored in a health equity question; and (2) work in teams on a group research project (secondary analysis or design-based project) culminating in a professional presentation and brief manuscript-style report. Students affiliated with SPARK would additionally complete SPARK-specific milestones (e.g., IRB drafting, primary data collection, conference presentation) through the SPARK Track described below. Non-SPARK students will achieve the same learning outcomes without the expectation of one-on-one mentor-driven projects. FOR SPARK STUDENTS ONLY: The SPARK program provides research training for undergraduates at the University of Kentucky. Students in this track, known as "SPARKlers," receive mentorship, stipends, and project funding as they engage in research-intensive projects on critical health disparities in local communities. Through the program, SPARKlers learn to ask significant research questions, manage budgets, develop protocols, adhere to human subjects and research integrity standards, and build professional skills for future academic or career opportunities. Each SPARKler is supported by both a CHET Faculty Mentor and a UK Research Faculty Mentor with expertise in their area of interest. During this course, SPARKlers are expected to complete a developmental literature review, draft a health equity research proposal, and submit an Institutional Review Board (IRB) application. Acceptable approaches include surveys, focus groups, observational studies, behavioral trials, and in-depth interviews. Following approval, SPARKlers will carry out their projects over the summer, analyze data with their faculty mentors, and prepare results for presentations and publication.
